Structure of the databaseThe data-base contains space for holding up to 12000 unit operations. These are referred to by code numbers which form a continuous sequence of integers from 1 to 12000. The data-base is divided into three main sections as shown in Figure 6. The Boustead Model database is initially configured to hold data on 12 000 separate unit operations. The region covered by code numbers 1 to 6000 is referred to as the core; this contains the data supplied with the model and this area should not be used by the user as any data entered in this region of the data-base will be overwritten when the core is updated. The section lying in the range of code numbers 6001 to 11000 is referred to as the top and is available for use by the user. The region covered by code numbers 11001 to 12000 is referred to as the store and contains information which is incomplete in some respects but is provided for use in emergencies. The top database can be extended but the present structure is adequate for most applications.
